Yvonne Barton-Leach holds Graduate and Postgraduate qualifications in composition. Yvonne has been described as one of Sydney's exciting emerging queer composers. 

She has pursued a career as a freelance composer, arranger and conductor. Yvonne has studied conducting under the tutelage of Hans-Dieter Michatz, Simon Kenway and Dr Sarah Penika-Smith. Her composition tutors included Dr Houston Dunleavy, Simone East and Anton Koch.

Yvonne is currently the conductor of a number of Primary School Concert Bands in the Sydney area. Yvonne conducts both Adult and Children's Choirs including Menai Community Choir. She recently assisted in a research project in the Sutherland Shire, conducting a choir for the PHaMs program. This program looked at how singing in a choir assists adults dealing with mental illness to gain a more positive mental state and help to integrate them back into the wider community.

 

Yvonne has conducted Chamber Orchestras and Chamber Ensembles, including being guest conductor for Kogarah Community Orchestra. She has written and staged a one act Chamber Opera. Yvonne has arranged music for the Music Theatre group KORE Productions, and is currently arranging piano reductions and reorchestrating the music for Michael Orland's rock musical “Beaudy”. Yvonne has been the conductor on studio recordings for other composers.

Yvonne's compositional works have been featured at Concerts in Sydney, including the 2011 "Dreams and Visions" Concert and the Australian Institute of Music “Composition Showcase”. She was the first prise winner of the Sydney International Brass Festival 2013 Composition Competition, which included the world premiere performance of the piece at the opening night Gala Concert. Yvonne runs her own singing studio and has students that have placed first, second and third in major eisteddfods. She has been an active member on production teams and assisted with staging musicals, operas and variety shows.

 

Yvonne has been actively involved in concert bands as a former French Horn player, choirs and other musical opportunities since 5 years of age, including working as a Cabaret singer, vocalist and choreographer.
